Under The Sea Art

I'm so excited to be helping the Manta Trust, an amazing manta ray research and conservation charity, to raise money by taking part in their Cross the Oceans 2021 challenge. Throughout June I will try to swim and freedive 10 km in our local lake, pool or wherever I can find some water around London :). My goal is to raise at least £500 for the Manta Trust and as a little extra motivation I will use my marine inspired art to hopefully get more people interested :).

Everybody that donates will be entered into a prize draw to win a Manta Ray product from my Under The Sea Art Shop on Etsy.

For every person that donates £50: I will send you an A4 print of your choice free of charge.

For every person that donates £100: I will paint an underwater animal of your choice free of charge.

We are both part of the All For Blue team, which is an NGO registered in Greece, however internationnaly involved in increasing awareness around ocean pollution and marine conservation. Whenever we can we get involved in beach clean ups. Everyone can make a difference - all the small actions add up to make a big difference if we all do them.

One evening we were over at Greg's sisters (Sam) place and his niece Lottie, then 2 years old, was absolutely loving her painting. Once she had to go to bed, I grabbed one of the paint brushes and used up the leftover paint (the last time I picked up a paintbrush was when I was a child myself). To Greg's and Sam's surprise, I painted a humpback whale that was actually recognisable. A few weeks later I finished my Master's Thesis in Shark Research and as a graduation gift, Sam gave me a watercolour painting set. The next lockdown came and everything I did since then was paint. I absolutely fell in love with it, never ever would I have picked up a paintbrush let alone bought myself a painting set - so really, all my art that you can see now is due to Greg's niece and sister. Thank you for letting me discover one of my biggest passions in life, I will forever be so grateful for that.

This is us: Miri and Greg. If you follow us on social media you probably know us under the names MiriUnderTheSea and GingeUnderTheSea. We are both passionate ocean people, Greg's a dive instructor and National Geographic Educator and Miri is a dive master and marine biologist. Together we are doing everything we can to make people fall in love with the ocean and understand the issues our planet faces, in particular within the marine world. While Miri usually uses data and art to communicate this, Greg is actively involved in the education side of things - he has given talks about shark and marine conservation issues to thousands of students around the world. We hope to inspire more people to feel passionate about marine animals to develop a sense of urgency in the protection of our oceans.

Miriam is the artist of Under The Sea Art and a passionate marine biologist, conservationist and dive master. She grew up in the Black Forest in Germany, far away from the sea, yet she always had a connection to underwater animals. When she was little she painted more orcas than any other animals, but as she was getting older she stopped painting like most children do and followed her path to become a marine biologist. Only due to Covid lockdowns and a lucky coinsidence she re-discovered her passion for art and now couldn't imagine a life without it anymore.

Usually the ocean is my office but due to Covid, I had to get creative (literally) to still find a way to connect with the sea. I found this in painting. I do miss the ocean but painting makes it so much easier. I look at an animal and I see their soul, I wonder where they come from and what they go through in their daily life. I wonder whether they think and feel in a similar way to us. All these mysteries make the ocean so very intersting and every time I paint an animal I learn something new about it.
